Spring of the Krupa River

The Spring of the Krupa River, located near Semič in Slovenia’s enchanting Bela Krajina region, is a must-see destination for nature lovers and anyone seeking a tranquil escape. This remarkable karst spring emerges from beneath a dramatic 30-meter-high stone wall, forming a deep, emerald-green pool that marks the beginning of the Krupa River. The spring’s powerful flow—averaging 1,000 liters per second—creates a cool, clear stream that winds through lush meadows and forests, making the area a favorite for hikers and photographers.

Early mornings are especially magical, as mist drifts over the water and sunlight filters through the trees. The spring maintains a steady temperature of around 10°C year-round, and its serene setting is perfect for quiet reflection or a picnic by the water’s edge.

Ecologically, the Krupa Spring is a treasure trove. It is home to the rare Congeria Jalzici cave mussel—the only known cave mussel species in the world—as well as endemic snails, worms, and the indigenous European pond turtle. Birdwatchers will delight in spotting over forty species, including several endangered in Slovenia.

Visitors can deepen their understanding of the area’s unique underground fauna at the nearby Semič Museum House. While there are no set opening hours or admission fees, the Spring of the Krupa River is accessible year-round and offers a peaceful retreat into the heart of Bela Krajina’s natural beauty.
