Church of the Holy Spirit

The Church of the Holy Spirit stands on the edge of the old town of Črnomelj, the main town of Bela Krajina in southeastern Slovenia, and it is one of the town's oldest surviving buildings. It is a late Gothic church from the fifteenth century, with a compact nave and a pointed-arch design that were typical of small town churches in Carniola at the time. Its dedication to the Holy Spirit is common for chapels connected with hospitals and almshouses in medieval towns, where such institutions often stood just beyond the main streets, and the position here at the edge of the historic centre fits that pattern.

The church makes a good start to a walk through Črnomelj. The town's historic core is small and easy to see on foot, and the Primožičeva House is a short stroll away. The Church of the Holy Spirit fits into the wider cultural life of the town, which includes the Jurjevanje folk festival around the feast of St George in spring, when costumes, songs and dances fill the streets. Bela Krajina has a strong tradition of folk customs, and attending an event in the church is a pleasant way to experience them.
