River Kolpa

The Kolpa rises in the forested uplands of Gorski Kotar in Croatia, where it is known as the Kupa, and for more than a hundred kilometres it forms the border between Slovenia and Croatia. The Slovenian stretch runs through Bela Krajina and the Kočevje region, passing under wooded slopes and past villages such as Metlika, Adlešiči and Vinica. The river is famous as the warmest in Slovenia for swimming, with summer temperatures that often climb well above those of other rivers in the country, and it has a reputation for clean water. Many Slovenes spend summer holidays on its banks.

The river is a gentle one for most of its course. It flows slowly over gravel and limestone, in places widening into shallow pools and in others narrowing into quicker stretches, with willow, alder and poplar along the banks. That makes it ideal for canoeing and kayaking, and rental and guided trips are available from several points along the river, with routes of different length suitable for beginners and families. Swimming is possible at many spots, and there are small beaches and natural bathing places where the current is mild. Stand-up paddleboards and fishing are also popular, while a number of campsites stand on the banks, some with simple glamping houses.

The river is the centrepiece of the Kolpa Landscape Park, a protected area that covers the Slovenian side of the valley. The park protects riverside meadows, forest, karst springs and a rich range of wildlife. Otters, kingfishers, herons and many fish species live in and beside the water, and the area is good for birdwatching. Because the river is a border, the Croatian bank is only a short distance across the water, and the landscape on both sides is very similar.

The valley also has its own culture. Bela Krajina is known for its folk traditions, including painted Easter eggs, embroidered costumes and midsummer customs, and villages along the river keep these alive with festivals and craft workshops. Traditional inns on the banks serve local dishes and wine from the nearby hills. Cycling routes and hiking trails run along the valley and into the hills, so a stay can combine water and land activities.

The river suits families, paddlers, anglers, cyclists and anyone who wants a quiet summer by the water. July and August are the warmest and busiest months, while late spring and early autumn are calmer. Water levels change after heavy rain, and currents can be stronger than they look, so it is wise to follow local advice, wear a lifejacket on the water and check conditions before setting out.
