Bela Krajina, the south-eastern corner of Slovenia around Črnomelj, is a land of karst, and beneath its quiet hills and meadows lie caves, sinkholes and underground streams. The region is world famous among biologists for one reason: it is the only known home of the black olm, a dark-skinned relative of the pale cave salamander found in the rest of the Dinaric karst, which was discovered in the 1980s in a spring near Črnomelj. The animal, whose scientific name is Proteus anguinus parkelj, is a reminder that the underground world of Bela Krajina still holds surprises, and it is a symbol of the region's natural heritage.

Djud Cave is one of the smaller caves in this karst landscape, and it is not a developed show cave with lighting and walkways. That makes it a different kind of experience from the large tourist caves of Postojna or Škocjan. Reaching it usually involves a walk through woodland on rough paths, and the cave itself has the features typical of limestone caves: dark passages, chambers where water has dissolved the rock, and the damp, cool air that stays at a constant temperature throughout the year.
