Sodevska Stena Viewpoint

Sodevska Stena is a rocky viewpoint in the hills of Bela Krajina, near Črnomelj in southeastern Slovenia, with a wide outlook over the Poljanska valley and the landscape of the Kolpa River. The district is gentle, green and sparsely populated, made up of wooded hills, small villages and karst plateaus, and this overlook gives one of the best views of it. The location belongs to the area covered by Kolpa Landscape Park, where limestone, forest and river valleys combine to create a quiet and little-visited corner of the country.

The approach is part of the appeal. A path leads from the Sodevci karst pond, a small waterhole formed in a karst depression, which attracts frogs, insects, dragonflies and birds. From there a short walk of roughly ten minutes through woodland and past the remains of old stables brings you to the cliff edge. The route belongs to a marked local trail, the Čredniška trail, which shows how the district was once used as pasture.

At the top, the rock drops steeply, and the view opens over forested slopes and the open floor of the valley, with the Kolpa River in the distance forming the border with Croatia. A fixed safety arrangement with rods and chains secures the overhang, so visitors can lean out and look over the edge more safely, though the drop is real, and children need to be supervised. A bench and a table invite a rest or a picnic, and a visitor book is kept at the site, where those who reach the viewpoint sign their names.

The viewpoint is a good example of the quiet, low-key attractions that make Bela Krajina appealing. The region is known for birch woods, slow rivers, folk traditions and a relaxed pace. Other points of interest in the Črnomelj area include the Djud Cave, the marshes of Nerajski and Lahinjski Lug, the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Primožičeva House, along with local breweries, and the area is also known for a cave-dwelling amphibian, the olm, which lives in underground waters of the region and is sometimes called the black olm because of its dark skin.

The walk suits families, hikers and anyone who wants a short outing with a rewarding view. Wear sturdy shoes, since the path can be slippery after rain, and take water. The viewpoint can be reached from the road between Vinica and Stari trg, and it is best visited in clear weather, when the valley shows its full depth and colour.
