Sveti Areh

Sveti Areh lies high in the Pohorje Mountains above Maribor and combines spiritual heritage with the appeal of alpine nature. The area’s history is anchored by the Church of Sveti Areh, called the Church of St. Henry in some sources, a pilgrimage church that has been a beacon for the faithful since the seventeenth century. It was built on the site of an earlier chapel and became a focus for religious gatherings and processions, drawing pilgrims from across the region. Over the centuries Sveti Areh developed into a small settlement, with guesthouses and mountain lodges for visitors seeking both spiritual peace and the restoring power of nature.

The main attraction is the church itself, at an elevation of around 1,246 metres. Its simple but elegant architecture, surrounded by tall spruce and fir, gives a calm place for contemplation. Inside, visitors can see historic altars and religious art, and the grounds give wide views over the Pohorje plateau and the valleys below. The pilgrimage tradition is still alive, with annual festivals and religious events that bring locals and visitors together. A natural spring near the church is a quiet stop on the walk, and many pilgrims fill bottles there.

Sveti Areh is also a gateway to the Pohorje range, known for its extensive network of hiking and cycling trails. In summer visitors can follow scenic hikes through old forest, across mountain meadows and along ridgelines with long views. Popular routes include the trail from Spodnje Hoče, which climbs nearly 1,000 metres over about 17.7 kilometres, a rewarding challenge for experienced walkers, and shorter routes up from Ruše. Mountain biking paths cross the area, and it is a favourite place for nature photographers, birdwatchers and anyone seeking calm away from city life. The Areh Motion Park (Gibalni park Areh) in the Pohorje forest gives families active play and exercise stations among the trees, and the Ruška planinska koča, a classic mountain hut near the church, offers meals and a place to rest.

In winter Sveti Areh becomes a hub for snow sports. The Pohorje ski area, one of the largest in Slovenia, is easy to reach, with downhill skiing, snowboarding and cross-country trails for all levels. The crisp mountain air and snowy landscape create a magical mood, and mountain lodges offer cosy retreats with traditional Slovenian food and hospitality.

Practical information: Sveti Areh can be reached by car from Maribor, with well-kept mountain roads leading to the church and nearby lodges. Public transport is limited, so driving or arranging a transfer is advised. Parking is available near the church and trailheads. Accommodation ranges from mountain huts and guesthouses to hotels in nearby Maribor. The area is well equipped for visitors, with marked trails, information signs and seasonal events.

Many visitors combine Sveti Areh with a stay in Ruše or Maribor and a day at the nearby Pohorje sights, for example the peat bog lakes and the forests of the plateau. The walk from the church to the nearby meadows takes less than an hour, the views change with the light, and an evening here, when the day visitors have left, shows why the hill has drawn pilgrims for centuries. It is one of Slovenia’s quieter mountain corners, close to the city but with the feel of the high forest.

Seasonal advice: the best time to visit is late spring to early autumn (May to October) for hiking, cycling and enjoying the green mountain scenery. Summer brings mild temperatures and long daylight hours, ideal for outdoor activities. In winter (December to March) the region is popular for skiing and snow sports, though weather can be variable and some trails may be snowed in. Visitors should be prepared for mountain weather, which can change quickly, and bring suitable gear. Whatever the season, Sveti Areh offers a good mix of culture, nature and recreation, and it is a rewarding place for most kinds of visitors.
