Natural spring near Church of Sveti Areh

Sveti Areh is a small settlement and a pilgrimage site on the Pohorje, the broad forested range south of the Drava, high above the town of Ruše. It stands at an altitude of around twelve hundred metres on the northern side of the range, in a landscape of spruce forest, meadows and clearings, and it has long been a destination for walkers, cyclists, pilgrims and skiers. The hilltop church, dedicated to Saint Aredius, whose name was shortened in Slovene to Areh, is one of the best-known landmarks of the area, and the spring near it is a modest but welcome feature of the walk.

The church is a small building on a rise, with a simple tower and a churchyard, surrounded by meadows and woods, and it has been a place of devotion for centuries. Pilgrims came to Areh on the saint's feast day, and the church was a landmark for travellers on the ridge. From the grounds there are views across the forested slopes and, on clear days, over the plain below. Inside, the church is simple, and its quiet setting is the main attraction. Visitors should show the usual respect for a place of worship.

The spring is a short walk from the church along the forest path. Spring water flows from the ground in a small stone basin among mossy rocks and tall trees, and walkers often stop to refill their bottles and rest in the shade. Water sources like this one have long had a place in the tradition of pilgrimage, where the spring is thought of as a place of refreshment and renewal. As with any natural spring, it is sensible to treat the water with caution, since quality can change with weather and season, and it is not tested like tap water. Many walkers carry their own water as a precaution.

The surrounding area offers much more. Areh is a small winter sports area with gentle ski slopes, and in summer a motion park, Gibalni park Areh, offers fitness stations and activities for families. The mountain hut of Ruše, the Ruška planinska koča, lies close by and serves food, and marked paths lead through the Pohorje forests to viewpoints and to other huts. Cycling routes also run along forest roads, and the area is a favourite of mountain bikers.

The spring suits walkers, cyclists, families and pilgrims looking for a quiet stop. Early morning and late afternoon are peaceful, and autumn colours are especially fine. Bring layers, since weather on the Pohorje changes quickly, and check conditions before setting out.
