Ruše

Ruše lies just west of Maribor and brings together the calm of the Drava River with the adventure of the Pohorje Mountains. Its history goes back to medieval times, when the area developed as a riverside settlement and later as a centre of forestry and trade. The town’s growth was shaped by its position along the Drava, which provided transport and fertile land. In the early twentieth century the river was dammed here for one of the first hydroelectric plants on the Drava, and Ruše developed industries that drew on power and timber. Today Ruše keeps a small-town character while offering activities for those who want both rest and adventure.

The setting is one of Ruše’s greatest assets. The nearby Pohorje Mountains are a year-round playground. In winter the Mariborsko Pohorje Ski Resort is easy to reach, with skiing, snowboarding and cross-country trails. In warmer months a network of hiking and mountain biking trails opens, including the well-known Pot med krošnjami Pohorje (Treetop Walk) farther along the massif, which gives views over the forests and valleys. The Lovrenška jezera, a group of peat bog lakes on the Pohorje plateau, is another highlight for nature lovers and photographers.

The Drava River adds to the appeal, with the Drau Cycle Path running through town and linking it to Maribor and other riverside communities. The path is part of a long international route, and the Ruše stretch is a flat and pleasant ride. The riverbanks are good for walking, jogging and picnics, while kayaking and fishing are also popular. The Areh Pond and surrounding woodland give quiet places for birdwatching and relaxation.

Culturally, Ruše has several historic churches, among them the Church of Sveti Areh, which stands high in the hills and reflects the spiritual heritage of the area. Local festivals and events celebrate traditional music, food and crafts and give visitors a taste of regional culture. The closeness of Maribor means that city amenities, museums and restaurants are a short drive or bike ride away.

Ruše is also a starting point for exploring the wider Maribor-Pohorje region. Day trips can include Maribor, the Drava wine region and the hills and forests of Pohorje. The gentle terrain and marked routes make the area good for family outings and relaxed exploration. In autumn, the Pohorje forests turn gold and red, and the wine hills nearby host harvest events.

Getting to Ruše is straightforward, with good road and rail connections from Maribor and other regional centres. The town is compact and easy to navigate on foot or by bicycle, and parking is available for those arriving by car. Public transport makes it convenient for visitors without a car to reach both the town and the surrounding natural attractions.

The best time to visit is May to October, when the weather is mild and suits hiking, cycling and outdoor activities. Spring and early autumn offer vibrant colours and fewer crowds, while summer is the time for riverside recreation and festivals. Winter draws skiers and snow sports enthusiasts to the nearby Pohorje slopes.

A relaxed itinerary might combine a morning ride on the Drava path, a short walk to a viewpoint above the town and an afternoon in Maribor, with its old vine and the riverside Lent quarter, returning to Ruše for dinner at a local inn.

With its mix of riverside relaxation, mountain adventure and welcoming community, Ruše shows the best of northeastern Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage.
