Šumik, set deep within the Pohorje mountain range in northeastern Slovenia, is one of the country’s most treasured natural sanctuaries. The area is renowned for its primeval forest, a rare ecosystem that has remained largely untouched by human activity for centuries. This ancient woodland, part of the Pohorje Natural Park, is a living museum of biodiversity, sheltering a remarkable array of plant and animal species, some of which are rare or endangered. The forest’s preservation is due in part to its rugged, steep terrain and relative inaccessibility, which historically deterred logging and development.

The history of Šumik is closely tied to the broader history of the Pohorje region. For centuries, the dense forests of Pohorje provided resources for local communities, but certain areas like Šumik were spared from intensive exploitation. The forest’s status as a protected area has allowed it to retain its original character, with massive beech, fir, and spruce trees dominating the landscape. The area is also rich in mosses, ferns, and wildflowers, creating a lush, green environment that feels almost primeval. Wildlife is abundant, with deer, foxes, and a variety of birds inhabiting the forest, while the streams and ravines provide habitats for amphibians and aquatic life.

The main attractions of Šumik are its spectacular waterfalls: Veliki Šumik (the Great Šumik) and Mali Šumik (the Little Šumik). Veliki Šumik is the largest waterfall in the Pohorje region, plunging over 24 meters into a rocky gorge surrounded by dense forest. The waterfall is especially impressive in spring and after heavy rains, when the water volume is at its peak. Mali Šumik, though smaller, is equally enchanting, with its gentle cascades and tranquil pools. Both waterfalls are accessible via marked hiking trails that wind through the forest, offering visitors a chance to experience the area’s natural beauty up close.

Hiking is the primary activity in Šumik, with several well-maintained trails suitable for different fitness levels. The most popular route is the circular trail from the village of Lovrenc na Pohorju, which takes hikers through the heart of the primeval forest and past both waterfalls. The trails can be steep and slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Along the way, interpretive signs provide information about the forest’s ecology and history, enriching the hiking experience. In addition to hiking, the area is popular for nature photography, birdwatching, and peaceful contemplation. The forest’s tranquility and the soothing sound of rushing water create an ideal setting for relaxation and mindfulness.

Getting to Šumik is relatively straightforward by car. The nearest town is Lovrenc na Pohorju, which is accessible from Maribor (about 30 km away) by road. From Lovrenc, visitors can follow signs to the Šumik forest reserve, where parking is available near the trailheads. Public transportation options are limited, so driving is recommended. There are no major facilities within the forest itself, preserving its wild character, but basic amenities, accommodation, and restaurants can be found in Lovrenc na Pohorju and nearby towns.

Seasonal advice: Šumik is beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn (May to October), when the trails are most accessible and the waterfalls are at their most impressive. In spring, the forest bursts into life with wildflowers and vibrant greenery, while autumn brings a spectacular display of golden and red foliage. Summer offers pleasant temperatures and longer daylight hours, ideal for hiking. In winter, the area can be snow-covered and trails may be icy or difficult to navigate, so caution is advised. Regardless of the season, visitors should come prepared for changing weather and bring sufficient water and snacks, as there are no services within the reserve. Šumik remains a hidden gem for those seeking Slovenia’s wild, unspoiled nature.
