Church of Sveti Areh

The Church of Sveti Areh stands quietly amid the forests of Pohorje, offering visitors a blend of spiritual history and natural beauty. Dedicated to Emperor Henry II, it is one of only four churches in Slovenia honoring this Holy Roman Emperor. The church’s origins trace back to the late 15th century, with significant expansions in the mid-1600s and the addition of a bell tower around 1600, giving the building its distinctive silhouette.

One of the church’s most remarkable features is the stone tomb of St. Henry, a 13th-century marble relief depicting Duke Ottokar IV of Styria. This tomb was relocated from the Žiče Charterhouse to Sveti Areh after 1756, adding a unique historical layer to the site. The church’s interior and peaceful setting invite quiet reflection, while its history attracts those interested in medieval art and architecture.

Surrounded by the rolling hills and forests of Pohorje, the church is accessible via a moderately demanding 5.2-kilometer hiking trail, taking about 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete. The area is popular year-round, with hiking in the warmer months and cross-country skiing in winter. Families with children aged six and older often enjoy the journey, making it a rewarding outing for visitors of all ages.
