Limbuš

Limbuš lies on the Drava River just west of Maribor, Slovenia’s second city, and it is close enough that the two feel like neighbours. The village keeps a rural character despite the city’s growth, with fields, orchards and wooded slopes on the northern side of the river and the green rise of the Pohorje Mountains in the distance. Its history goes back to medieval times, and the Parish Church of St. James, the Župnijska cerkev sv. Jakoba, is the village landmark and a reminder of its spiritual heritage. The church, with its distinctive architecture and peaceful setting, is a focal point for the community and a popular stop for visitors interested in local history and art.

One of Limbuš’s most unusual attractions is the Chocolate Village by the River, a glamping resort where everything revolves around chocolate. Guests can stay in themed accommodation, join workshops and tastings and book spa treatments, which makes it popular with families, couples and anyone with a sweet tooth. The riverside location gives it views and direct access to the water and the trails along the bank.

Just beyond the village, Betnava Mansion is a striking example of Slovenian manor architecture in the Betnava Forest. It was historically a summer residence of the bishops, and its park and forest are pleasant for walks. The wider Betnava area is good for short rides and picnics.

Walking and cycling trails follow the Drava River and connect Limbuš to the wider Maribor-Pohorje region. The Pohorska Vzpenjača Cable Car, located nearby, gives easy access to the Pohorje Mountains, where visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking and, in winter, skiing. The area’s gentle terrain and well-marked routes make it suitable for leisurely exploration, while the riverbanks are good for picnics, fishing and birdwatching.

Local life includes events, markets and festivals that celebrate regional traditions, food and crafts. For food, Vnukec is a standout for traditional Slovenian cooking, Pri Magdi Gostilna in Pizzerija serves hearty Italian-style and local dishes, and the LASTOVKA ice cream shop has been a local favourite for years. Visitors can also sample homemade pastries, local wines and Styrian dishes in village inns and cafés. The proximity of Maribor means museums, theatre and the old wine cellar quarter along the Drava are only a short trip away, giving a mix of rural and city life.

Getting to Limbuš is straightforward by car, with roads connecting the village to Maribor (about 6 km away) and other regional centres. Public buses serve the area, and the village is compact and easy to explore on foot or by bike. Parking is available near major attractions and at the Chocolate Village resort.

The best time to visit is early July to mid-August, when the weather is warm and ideal for riverside activities, cycling and chocolate-themed experiences. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and fewer crowds, while winter is good for cosy stays and a day on the Pohorje ski slopes.

With its mix of riverside calm, chocolate indulgence and access to outdoor adventure, Limbuš is an easy and inexpensive base for exploring Slovenia’s Maribor-Pohorje region.

A sensible plan for a day here is to walk along the Drava in the morning, visit the church and the Betnava forest at midday, and finish with ice cream from LASTOVKA before heading to the old town of Maribor, the Lent riverside and the vineyards of the wider Štajerska hills.
