Areh Motion Park (Gibalni park Areh)

Areh is a high plateau on the Pohorje range above the town of Ruše, in northeastern Slovenia, and it is best known as a quiet place of forests, meadows and a pilgrimage church. The Areh Motion Park, called Gibalni park Areh in Slovene, adds a lively note to this landscape. Its name means movement park, and the idea is to get people, especially children and families, moving and playing in the open air. The park sits among the trees near the Church of Sveti Areh and the Ruška planinska koča, and it gives a reason to come up to the plateau for more than a walk and a meal.

A motion park of this kind offers a collection of physical challenges and playful activities in a natural setting. Visitors can expect equipment for climbing, balancing and jumping, along with attractions that are more unusual. Zorbing, in which a person rolls down a gentle slope inside a huge inflatable plastic ball, is one of the more eye-catching, and it is as funny to watch as to try. A variant called zorb football turns the game into a wobbly, comic contest with players inside the balls. For those who want speed, mountain carts and similar rolling machines are used on forest paths, giving a descent that is thrilling but safe, and these attractions are generally supervised by staff who explain the rules and provide helmets.
