Veliki Šumik Waterfall

Veliki Šumik Waterfall, hidden deep within the untouched Šumik primeval forest in Pohorje, is one of Slovenia’s most spectacular natural sights. At 24 meters high, it is the largest waterfall on a limestone base in the country and a true reward for those who venture into this wild, protected landscape. The surrounding forest, covering 19 hectares, is a haven for biodiversity, with ancient beech, pine, and fir trees sheltering rare plants and creating a magical, mossy atmosphere.

Reaching Veliki Šumik is an adventure in itself. The most popular starting point is the parking area at Pri Bajgotu, from which a challenging hiking trail leads through steep, rocky gorges along the Lobnica stream. The path is rugged and can be slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear and a good level of fitness are recommended. The hike takes about 1.5 hours round-trip and rewards hikers with breathtaking views of the cascading water and the pristine forest.

Along the way, you may also encounter Mali Šumik, a smaller but equally picturesque waterfall. The area is free to visit and is especially appealing to nature enthusiasts and photographers seeking a tranquil escape from busier tourist spots.
