Lobnica Primeval Forest

Lobnica Primeval Forest in the Pohorje region is a true natural sanctuary, offering visitors a rare glimpse into Slovenia’s untouched woodland heritage. Spanning 19 hectares along the Lobnica River, this old-growth forest is home to towering beech, spruce, and fir trees, as well as a rich diversity of rare plants and wildlife. The main hiking trail begins near the town of Ruše, winding through lush valleys shaped by the Lobnica River. Today, hikers follow a 10-kilometer route that is both scenic and challenging, with an altitude difference of 510 meters and a duration of about two hours.

Along the way, you’ll encounter breathtaking views of the Veliki Šumik and Mali Šumik waterfalls, two of Slovenia’s most powerful and beautiful cascades. The path is demanding in places, so sturdy footwear and a good level of fitness are recommended. There are no entrance fees or set opening hours, allowing visitors to experience the forest’s magic at their own pace.
