Celje

Celje is a city of contrasts, an industrial and regional centre with a small and attractive historic core. It stands on the Savinja River in the Celje basin, ringed by the Savinja hills, about seventy-five kilometres from Ljubljana. The Romans founded the town as Claudia Celeia, and part of the ancient city can still be seen beneath modern streets; Roman streets, houses and mosaics are displayed in the Celeia archaeological site and in the Regional Museum. In the Middle Ages the Counts of Celje rose from local nobles to princes of the Holy Roman Empire, and their stronghold dominated the region. Their legacy gave the city its nickname, the City of Princes, and Celje’s old coat of arms with three stars is still widely used.

Celje Castle is the highlight. It is the largest medieval castle complex in Slovenia, set on a hill above the town, with ramparts, towers and a palace whose rooms host exhibitions. Views extend over the Savinja Valley. In summer the castle stages concerts, medieval-themed festivals and events, and the walk up from the old town through the woods takes about half an hour.

At the foot of the hill, the old town offers cobbled streets, restored facades and cafés. Trg Celjskih Knezov, the Square of the Counts of Celje, is a lively public space framed by historic buildings, including Celje Hall. The Regional Museum, housed in the Old Count’s Court, has archaeological finds, art and reconstructed historic interiors. Modern art is represented by galleries, including the Račka Gallery of Erotic Art, an unusual venue that may not suit every visitor.

Green spaces are a strength. The Savinja riverside promenade is a favourite for walking and cycling and connects parks, playgrounds and sports facilities. The Town Forest on the edge of the city has marked trails and the Treehouse, billed as Slovenia’s largest treetop retreat, which is popular with families. Šmartno Lake, about seven kilometres north of the centre, is a tranquil place to swim, walk or cycle. Celjska Koča, in the hills above, offers year-round walking, hotel facilities and winter activities.

Outdoor and sporting life is a local point of pride. Celje has more than sixty sports clubs and a year-round sports complex, and a strong calendar of fairs, concerts and festivals. Natural water sources in the region support nearby spa and wellness centres, and Slovenian visitors often combine a day in Celje with a spa stay in Rogaška Slatina or Laško.

Local cuisine is Styrian, with pumpkin-seed oil, roast meats, dumplings and strudels, and regional wines from nearby slopes. Restaurants range from traditional taverns to modern cafés, and local markets sell fresh produce.

Getting there is simple by car, train or bus, with direct connections from Ljubljana and Maribor. The compact city centre is walkable, and bike rentals and public transport serve the outskirts. Day trips include Logarska Dolina, Rogaška Slatina and Žiče Charterhouse.

The best time to visit is mid-June to early September for festivals and outdoor activities. Spring and autumn are mild and scenic, and winter brings Christmas markets.

With its mix of Roman remains, medieval castle, parks and good transport links, Celje makes an easy base for a few days in eastern Slovenia, and prices are noticeably gentler than in the capital.
