Šumik Waterfall Trail

The Šumik Waterfall Trail leads into the forests of Pohorje, the broad wooded range south of the Drava between Maribor and Slovenj Gradec. The trail starts near the hamlet of Šumik, not far from Lovrenc na Pohorju, and follows the Lobnica Stream upstream through a protected area of old forest to a waterfall that is among the best known in the Pohorje. The route is short enough for a morning's walk but gives a real sense of how different this wet, silent side of the mountains is from the open farmland below.

The forest is the first reward. Along the lower sections the path passes through the Lobnica primeval forest, a reserve in which beech, fir and spruce have been left to grow old and fall, so the woods have the fallen trunks, moss and dim light that managed forests lack. Pohorje is made of crystalline rock rather than limestone, so the streams are soft and acidic, and the water carries a brown tint of the forest floor. Wooden bridges, steps and railings help walkers over the wet stretches, and information boards explain the plants and wildlife along the route.

The Veliki Šumik waterfall is the climax of the trail. The Lobnica spills in several steps over broad rock slabs into a rocky gorge, with spray hanging in the air and mossy boulders on every side. A walkway and viewing platforms allow safe views of the falls from below and above. Water volume changes with the season, and the falls are at their most impressive in spring and after rain, while in winter the cascade can freeze into shapes of ice. Nearby, a small lake known as Falski tajhti, or the Silent Lake, adds a tranquil stop for those who want to extend the walk.

The path is suitable for most people who can handle uneven ground, but it can be slippery, so good footwear matters. It is not a trail for flip-flops, and children should be kept close to the edges. Because the forest holds humidity, it stays cool even on hot days, which makes it a pleasant escape in summer, and autumn brings rich colours.

A visit pairs with the nearby Partisan hospital Jesen, which commemorates the wartime resistance in the Pohorje forests. The trail suits families, walkers and photographers, and it is easy to combine with a drive through Pohorje's villages.
