Podčetrtek

Podčetrtek lies in the green landscape of eastern Slovenia and combines wellness, history and natural beauty. The town’s roots go back to the Middle Ages, with its name first appearing in records in the thirteenth century. Over the centuries Podčetrtek developed as a small market town, helped by its position on the Sotla River and its closeness to trade routes between Slovenia and Croatia. The Podčetrtek Deer Reserve lets visitors watch deer in a natural setting, while the nearby Podsreda Castle, in the Kozjansko Regional Park, gives an insight into the region’s feudal history and hosts cultural events through the year. Golf lovers can play the A-Golf Olimje course, and local farms welcome guests for tastings of regional wines, honey and traditional food. The Witch’s Hut (Čarovniška hiša) is a playful stop for children, the Museum of Farming Equipment shows how local people worked the land, and the Kozmus Beekeeping Farm explains bees and honey. Rural homesteads such as Amon Homestead and Haler Homestead offer food and a taste of country life.

Getting to Podčetrtek is straightforward. The town is reached by car on good roads from Ljubljana (about 110 km) and Maribor (about 60 km). There is also a train station in Podčetrtek, with regular connections to major Slovenian cities. Ample parking is available near the spa and main attractions. The town’s compact size makes it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, and local tourist offices provide maps and information.

Seasonal advice: Podčetrtek is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the weather is warm and suits outdoor activities and the spa’s outdoor pools. Summer is especially lively, with family events and festivals. Autumn brings colourful foliage and harvest celebrations in the vineyards. In winter the thermal water gives a cosy retreat from the cold, and the spa’s wellness facilities stay open.
