Amon Homestead

Amon Homestead is a family-run farm in the hills of Podčetrtek, in the Kozjansko region of eastern Slovenia, near the Sotla river that forms the border with Croatia. The area is a landscape of vineyards, orchards and woods on gentle slopes, with small villages of whitewashed houses and church towers, and wine has been made here for centuries. The homestead belongs to this tradition, with a long family history of growing grapes and making wine, and the aim is to offer visitors a taste of rural life in a simple and genuine way, using food and wine as the main introduction.

The centre of the visit is the cellar, which is arranged in the manner of a traditional wine cellar, with wooden furniture, old tools and a cool, dim atmosphere. The wines come from the Šmarje-Virštajn area, a small wine district within Slovenian Styria that stretches across the hills around Podčetrtek, where white wines such as Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer dominate, along with some reds. Guided tastings introduce the wines of the house, including recent vintages and older bottles from the family's archive, which give an idea of how the wines develop with age, and they are usually served with cold snacks, such as cured meats, cheese and bread, that show off local flavours. A small shop sells homemade products and preserves, so that visitors can take a taste of the farm home.

The kitchen follows old family recipes and emphasises organic ingredients grown on the farm or obtained from neighbours, so that dishes change with the season. Typical items on a table in this region include soups, roast meats, dumplings, home-baked bread, salads dressed with pumpkin-seed oil and fruit-based desserts. Guests who wish to stay longer can use the rooms in the guesthouse on the property, which are made with natural materials and have a peaceful, green outlook, and there are facilities for children, which makes the farm a good choice for families. Signposted routes wind through the vineyards and woods, giving views over the hills, and the area has been recognised for its approach to sustainable tourism. Nearby attractions include the Olimje Monastery with its historic pharmacy, Terme Olimia Resort, Haler Homestead, Jelenov Greben, the Kozmus Beekeeping Farm, the Museum of Farming Equipment, the Olimje Chocolate Shop and The Witch's Hut. A day at Amon can be combined easily with some of these stops, and spring and early autumn are the most attractive seasons.
