Rogaška Slatina

Rogaška Slatina lies in eastern Slovenia, in the Štajerska region, in a sheltered valley a short distance from the Croatian border. The area’s mineral springs were known in Roman times, but the town’s golden age began in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and peaked in the nineteenth, when its waters attracted aristocrats, writers and musicians from across the Habsburg lands. Rogaška Slatina’s spa architecture, as you see it today, dates mostly from that period, and the layout of parks and promenades still follows the plan made for those guests.

Zdraviliški trg, the Spa Square, is the focus of the town. It is lined with elegant hotels and pavilions in a park setting, and the Tempel Pavilion, a handsome structure in which the mineral springs are served, is the best place to try the water itself. The best known is Donat Mg, one of the most magnesium-rich mineral waters in the world, long recommended for digestion. Do not expect a pleasant flavour; the water is strongly mineral and is usually taken in small measured amounts. Casino Fontana in Hotel Donat adds an evening entertainment option, and the shops and cafés near the square provide a lively promenade atmosphere.

Glassmaking is the second local tradition. Rogaška Glassworks, known worldwide as Rogaška Crystal, has produced cut glass in the town since 1927, and visitors can see the craft and buy pieces in the factory shop. Another stop is the Cacti Pavilion, a surprisingly large collection of cacti and succulents that appeals to plant lovers and children. Ana’s Mansion, a restored nineteenth-century villa, houses a museum and gallery. Exhibitions in the town cover art, history and cultural heritage, reflecting its cosmopolitan past, and the Anin festival brings music and community events each year.

Outdoor space is easy to find. Forest Park and the surrounding hills offer gentle walking and cycling trails, and the nearby hill of Boč, with its viewpoint and flora, is the most rewarding walk in the area. With a few hours to spare you can reach the summit and look out over the Štajerska countryside and, on clear days, toward Croatia. The town’s spa resorts provide thermal pools, massages, beauty treatments such as those offered by Afrodita, and medical programs, and the Rogaška Riviera water park is popular with families.

Food reflects Styrian cooking, with pumpkin-seed oil, dumplings, roast meats, local wines from nearby vineyards and a range of lighter spa menus. Hotels and restaurants around the square serve both traditional and healthy dishes, and day trips to vineyards in the surrounding hills are easy to arrange.

Getting there is easy by car from Celje, about thirty-five kilometres away, and from Ljubljana and Zagreb in Croatia. Trains and buses also serve the town. The centre is compact and walkable, with parking near major hotels, bike rentals and local guides for exploring the wider area.

The best time to visit is mid-June to early September for outdoor activities and festivals. Spring and autumn are mild and scenic, and winter suits relaxed spa stays.

The town’s long association with European spa culture is still part of its appeal, and it remains one of Slovenia’s most elegant places to slow down for a few days. Many guests plan three or four nights, alternating spa sessions with gentle walks through the park and short excursions to the surrounding hills and nearby wine villages.
