Rogla

Rogla stands at an elevation of over 1,500 metres on the Pohorje massif and is one of Slovenia’s leading mountain destinations, known for a wide range of outdoor activities and wild landscapes. The area’s history as a recreation centre began in the twentieth century, when its high meadows and forests were recognised for their health benefits and potential for winter sports. Today Rogla is a modern resort that welcomes visitors all year, with a mix of adventure, wellness and alpine calm. Only a handful of people live here permanently, so almost everything on the plateau is geared to visitors.

In winter Rogla becomes a busy ski resort, with over 12 kilometres of well-groomed slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. The resort is especially family-friendly, with gentle beginner runs, a children’s snow park and ski schools. More advanced skiers can enjoy night skiing and the Fun Park, with jumps and obstacles for freestyle fans. Cross-country skiing is another major draw, with more than 24 kilometres of scenic trails through snowy forest and open plateau. Reliable snow, usually from December to April, makes Rogla a favourite for winter sports in Slovenia.

As the snow melts, Rogla shows a different side. The area becomes a place for hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers, with marked trails through dense spruce forest, across peat bogs and to wide viewpoints. The Lovrenc Lakes, a group of peat bog lakes surrounded by wooden boardwalks, are a highlight for walkers and photographers, and the peat bog itself is a rare high-altitude habitat. The Treetop Walk Pohorje gives a different perspective, letting visitors stroll above the forest canopy with sweeping views. Adventure seekers can try the summer toboggan run, Zlodej's Adrenaline Toboggan, visit the adventure park or explore on horseback. The extensive forests and the wider Pohorje Hills give space for long walks, and Rogla Zoo is a small family stop.

Rogla’s wellness offer is another reason for its popularity. The nearby Zreče Thermal Spa has thermal pools, saunas and wellness treatments, ideal for relaxing after a day of activity. Local farms and restaurants serve hearty Styrian food, with specialities such as mushroom soup, buckwheat dishes and local cheese and honey; the Meglič Organic Farm and the cheese-making hill farm Lamperček – Obrul are known for their products. Wine lovers can visit the Zlati grič Wine Cellar to taste regional varieties and learn about local winemaking.

The region’s cultural and natural heritage is shown through seasonal events, guided nature walks and educational programmes on the plants and animals of the Pohorje Hills. Rogla is also a starting point for exploring the wider Pohorje region, including the towns of Zreče and Slovenske Konjice and the quiet Lovrenc na Pohorju.

Getting to Rogla is straightforward by car, with well-kept roads from major cities such as Maribor (about 50 km away) and Celje. Public transport includes buses to Zreče, with shuttle services or taxis for the final climb to Rogla. Ample parking is available at the resort, and accommodation ranges from hotels and guesthouses to mountain lodges and self-catering apartments.

The best time to visit depends on your interests. Winter (December to April) is ideal for skiing and snow sports, while late spring to early autumn (May to October) offers mild temperatures, flowering meadows and excellent conditions for hiking, cycling and wellness breaks. Summer is especially pleasant, with fresh mountain air and a full calendar of outdoor activities.

Rogla suits short breaks as well as longer stays. A weekend can include a morning walk to the peat bog and the lakes, a stroll above the trees on the Treetop Walk, a late lunch of Styrian dishes and an afternoon at the spa in Zreče, while in winter the same weekend is spent on the slopes and in a warm lodge. Because the plateau is high, the weather can change quickly, so bring warm layers even in July, and check road and snow conditions in winter before you set off.

With its mix of alpine adventure, natural beauty and wellness facilities, Rogla is a year-round destination for families, couples and solo travellers who want both excitement and relaxation in the Pohorje region.
