Trg Celjskih Knezov

Trg Celjskih Knezov, the Square of the Counts of Celje, is a broad public square in the centre of Celje, a town on the Savinja river in eastern Slovenia. It takes its name from the Counts of Celje, the medieval dynasty that rose from regional nobles to princes of the Holy Roman Empire in the fifteenth century and for a time ranked among the most powerful houses in central Europe. They are the reason the town has such a prominent place in Slovenian history, and their three-star coat of arms still appears across Celje.

The best-known building on the square, and one of Celje’s landmarks, is the Narodni dom, a neo-Renaissance hall from the 1890s designed by the Czech architect Vladimir Hrasky. It was built as the cultural and social home of the Slovene community in a town in the Austro-Hungarian era, when German-speaking institutions dominated public life, and it hosted concerts, theatre, lectures and meetings. That role gave the building a symbolic weight beyond its architecture. Today it houses the City Municipality of Celje and gallery spaces with changing exhibitions, and its ornamented facade, tall windows and handsome interior spaces are worth a look even if you do not go inside.

From here it is a short walk to the old centre, where the Celje Regional Museum occupies the Old Counts' Mansion, and where Roman remains, an attraction known as Celeia, show that the settlement was a significant town long before the counts. Celje Castle looms on its hill above the town, and the ruins are the most evocative reminder of the dynasty. The sibling sights of the destination, from the Town Forest to Šmartno Lake and the sports complex, show that Celje also has a green side close to the centre.

The square is used for markets, festivals and open-air events, particularly in warm weather, and the pedestrian-friendly layout encourages lingering. In the evenings the buildings are lit and the cafes fill up, giving the square an easygoing character that suits a coffee break between sights.
