Celjska Koča

Celjska Koča is a recreation area and hotel complex in the wooded hills above Celje, a short drive from the town centre. The place began as a mountain house for walkers from Celje and grew into an all-year leisure destination, and it is popular with local families who want a quick escape into the forest. It sits at a modest altitude, so the walking is gentle and the setting is more of a hilltop woodland than an alpine summit, with beech and spruce around the buildings and clearings that open to views of the surrounding hills.

The main appeal is variety. Marked footpaths and cycling routes lead into the woods, and the area has a small ski slope that works in snowy winters and suits beginners and children, along with cross-country trails when conditions allow. Celje Castle, one of the largest castle ruins in the country, stands on a hill above the old town, and Trg Celjskih knezov, the square named after the counts, is at the centre of the pedestrian area. Šmartno Lake, a reservoir on the edge of town, is popular for swimming and walks in summer.
