Celje Castle

Celje Castle crowns a wooded hill above the town of Celje and the Savinja River, and it is one of the largest castle complexes in Slovenia. Slovenia’s most powerful medieval dynasty, the Counts of Celje, made it their stronghold in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, when the family rose from regional nobles to princes of the Holy Roman Empire and married into royal houses across central Europe. The fortress was already documented in the early fourteenth century, and under the counts it grew into a mass of towers, walls and residential buildings on the hilltop.

The family's story is full of drama. Barbara of Celje became queen of Hungary and empress through her marriage to Sigismund, and her brother Ulrich II was the last of the line: he was murdered in 1456 in Belgrade, and the Celje estates passed to the Habsburgs. Local legend also tells of Veronika of Desenice, the second wife of Frederick II of Celje, whose fate gave the story a romantic and tragic edge, and whom later writers turned into a figure of folklore. After the counts died out, the castle gradually lost its role, and over the following centuries it fell into ruin.

Today visitors find a ruin that has been consolidated and partly restored, so that the surviving walls and towers can be climbed safely. The most recognisable element is Frederick's Tower, a tall round tower that rises above the palace remains, and the keep, the palace hall and the ramparts give a good sense of how large the complex once was. Exhibitions inside tell the story of the counts and of daily life in a medieval castle, while guided tours cover the building history and the legends.

The viewpoints from the walls take in Celje, the Savinja valley and the hills beyond, and a walk around the outer wall is worth it for the light and the long views. In summer the castle hosts medieval-themed events with costumed performers, markets and tournament demonstrations, which makes it lively for families with children. Cafe and refreshment options exist on the site, and the path down to town is pleasant for those who prefer to walk rather than drive.
