Šmartno Lake

Šmartno Lake, Šmartinsko jezero in Slovene, is a reservoir on the northern edge of Celje, in a gentle landscape of hills and meadows in eastern Slovenia. It was created as an artificial lake in the twentieth century, mainly to hold back water and reduce flood risk in the valley, and over the years it has become the favourite recreation area of the people of Celje. Reeds and willows line parts of the shore, ducks and herons use the water, and the setting of low hills makes the lake feel calm and open, a short distance from the town centre.

The usual way to enjoy it is to walk or cycle the path that runs around the lake. The route is mostly flat and well kept, and it takes under an hour on foot, so it suits families with pushchairs, joggers and casual cyclists. Along the way, signposts and information boards explain the plants and animals of the lake, and benches give places to sit. In the early morning and at sunset the water is still and the light is soft, which makes these the best times for photography and quiet walks.

The lake also offers water activities in the warmer months. Rowing boats and kayaks can be hired, stand-up paddling is popular, and a wake park provides a livelier option for those who enjoy water sports with a tow cable. A wooden footbridge gives access to the water for swimming and paddling in summer, but water quality and conditions vary, so it is wise to follow local notices. Anglers use the lake, and a boathouse on the shore is a base for clubs and events.

There are simple facilities around the lake. A few pubs and cafes serve drinks and meals, picnic areas have tables, and playgrounds keep children busy. The area is lively on warm weekends, and quieter on weekdays and in the shoulder seasons. Paths also connect the lake with the surrounding countryside, so a longer walk or ride is easy to arrange.

Celje has other places worth a visit, including Celje Castle on its hill, the old town with Trg Celjskih Knezov, the Roman remains of Celeia and the Town Forest, which offers more walking close to the centre. The lake fits comfortably into a day that combines town sights with fresh air.
