Bukovniško jezero

Bukovniško jezero lies near the village of Bukovnica in the Goričko region of Prekmurje, in the far northeast of Slovenia, close to the Hungarian border. It is a man-made lake, created to control flooding and improve the local ecosystem, and over time it has become a beloved recreational area, with calm water, forest surroundings and diverse plant and animal life. The lake covers about eight hectares, with an average depth of about two metres and a maximum of five, which makes it suitable for fishing, boating and quiet contemplation.

One of the main attractions is the Pustolovski Park (Adventure Park), which has six rope courses of varying difficulty and more than sixty pieces of sports equipment. The park is designed for children and adults, with safe challenges among the trees. Families can spend a day climbing, ziplining and joining team activities, while the nearby picnic areas and playgrounds offer space to rest.

The lake is surrounded by a mixed forest of hornbeams, beeches, sweet chestnuts and pines, which provides a habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. These chestnut-beech forests are unusual for the region and are especially attractive in autumn. Marked walking and cycling trails wind through the woods, connecting the lake to nearby villages and viewpoints, and a popular scenic route runs from Kobilje to the lake. The area is also known for its energy points, locations believed to have special healing or spiritual properties, which are marked along a circular path around the lake in the Energijski Park. Dragon lines, described as a radiesthetic phenomenon, are part of the same idea. Visitors can pause at these spots for meditation, yoga or simply to enjoy the calm; whether or not you share the belief, the loop is a pleasant walk. Stork Flight, one of the stops, draws on the white stork, the best-known bird of Prekmurje’s villages.

Quiet spiritual corners include the Chapel of St. Vid and Vid’s kut, a small, peaceful spot near the lake that suits a short rest on the walk.

Fishing is popular, with the lake stocked with carp, pike and other freshwater species. Anglers can buy day permits and enjoy a quiet natural setting. The shores are good for camping, with camper stops and facilities for overnight stays. The surrounding region offers other attractions, including the Dobrovnik Tropical Garden, local wineries and the Goričko Landscape Park, which has castles, orchards and hilltop views.

Getting to Bukovniško jezero is straightforward by car, with well-kept roads connecting the lake to Dobrovnik (about 3 km), Murska Sobota and other regional centres. Parking is available near the adventure park and main trailheads. The area is best explored on foot or by bike, with rental options and guided tours for those who want to discover more of Prekmurje’s natural wonders. Food is simple and local, and nearby villages offer Prekmurje dishes such as bograč and gibanica.

The best time to visit is from May to September, when the weather is warm and suits outdoor activities, camping and the adventure park. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, blooming wildflowers and fewer crowds, while summer is the season for family outings and lakeside relaxation.
