Moravske Toplice

Thermal spa town with wellness resorts and golf courses

Prekmurje region Top 9 destination

Moravske Toplice lies in the middle of Slovenia’s Prekmurje region, a place where relaxation and rural tradition go together. Its history as a spa began in the middle of the twentieth century, when thermal water rich in minerals was found beneath the fields during drilling. These waters, known for their therapeutic properties, soon attracted visitors from across Slovenia and neighbouring countries. Today Moravske Toplice is best known for Terme 3000, a large thermal spa and wellness resort that has become the town’s main attraction and economic engine.

Terme 3000 offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, saunas and wellness centres for families, couples and health seekers. The spa’s distinctive dark thermal mineral water is said to help with skin and joint conditions, and a range of massages, beauty treatments and medical therapies is available. The resort has a lively water park for children, quiet relaxation zones for adults and a full programme of fitness and wellness activities. Accommodation ranges from luxury hotels and apartments to campsites and glamping, so there is something for every taste and budget.

Beyond the spa, Moravske Toplice opens onto the gentle landscapes and cultural treasures of Prekmurje. The Livada Golf Course, next to Terme 3000, is one of the best in Slovenia, with 18 holes through meadows and woodland. The town is surrounded by cycling and walking trails that lead through sunflower fields, vineyards and villages; the Trim Trail Čreta is a simple outdoor fitness route that suits a morning jog or walk. Guided tours and bike rentals are easy to find, which makes it simple to see the region at a relaxed pace.

Cultural highlights include the nearby Plečnik Church in Bogojina, a striking modernist church designed by Jože Plečnik, Slovenia’s most famous architect, and the traditional farmsteads and wine cellars that dot the countryside. Peri Vino San is a pleasant place to taste regional wines, and the Memorial Linden for Tito is a quiet landmark that recalls the Yugoslav years. Visitors can try regional specialities such as Prekmurska gibanica (a layered pastry), pumpkin seed oil and local wines at village inns and markets. The tourist information centre provides maps, event listings and ideas for day trips to places such as the Vinarium Tower in Lendava, Bukovnica Lake and the floating mill on the Mura River.

Moravske Toplice is easy to reach by car, with good road connections from Murska Sobota, Maribor and Ljubljana. Public transport options include regional buses and trains to nearby towns, with local taxis or shuttles to the spa resorts. The town is compact and walkable, with most attractions and accommodation within easy reach.

The town is small and easy, with a calm routine: swim in the morning, walk or cycle through the fields before lunch, and spend the evening at a village inn tasting regional dishes and wine. Families often stay for several nights, since the resort offers activities for all ages, while couples tend to favour the quieter wellness zones and a round of golf.

The best time to visit is early June to mid-September, when the weather is warm and the outdoor pools and activities are in full swing. Spring and autumn also offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds and beautiful countryside, and winter visits are popular with those who want a cosy spa retreat, where the warm water contrasts with the cold air. Whatever the season, Moravske Toplice’s mix of wellness, nature and Prekmurje hospitality makes for a restful stay, and many visitors combine it with a trip to nearby Radenci and Murska Sobota.
