Vid's kut

Vid's kut is a quiet corner of the forest near Bukovniško jezero, the reservoir in the woods of the Dobrovnik area in Prekmurje, in the far northeast of Slovenia. The name means something like Vid's corner, and it refers to the local veneration of Saint Vitus, called Vid in Slovene, whose chapel and spring lie in the woods nearby. In Slovene the word vid also means sight, and folk tradition links springs dedicated to the saint with the healing of eyes, which is why people have long come to the spring to wash their eyes and to drink. Whatever one makes of the tradition, the spring and its surroundings are pleasant places to pause.

The forest here is unusual for Prekmurje, a region of open fields, maize and pumpkins. Hornbeam, beech, sweet chestnut and pine grow on sandy soils, and the shade gives a cool and quiet air on hot days. Paths lead from the village of Kobilje to the lake through this woodland, and they pass the chapel and spring, so Vid's kut is a natural stopping place on a walk. Local people have long considered the site special, and the idea of earth energies and dragon lines, which some believers associate with certain places in the forest, has added to its reputation. An energy park with marked points has been created in the area, and curious visitors can try the points for themselves, though the claims are a matter of belief and not of science.

The area around the lake has been developed for gentle recreation. The artificial lake was created to hold back flood water and has become a habitat for birds, amphibians and plants. A circular walk takes in the shore, and benches and picnic places allow a rest. The adventure park among the trees offers rope courses and other climbing elements for children, teenagers and adults, and the educational forest trail uses information boards to explain the trees, animals and cultural traditions of the area. A stork flight installation adds a playful element, and the scenery in autumn is rich with golden leaves.

Vid's kut suits families, walkers, cyclists and anyone who likes quiet forest places with a story. The paths are easy but can be muddy after rain, and mosquitoes and ticks are common in summer, so repellent and long trousers help.
