St. Michael's Church

Dovje is a village in the Upper Sava valley, just before Mojstrana, at the foot of the Karavanke range and facing the great wall of the Julian Alps across the valley. The Church of St Michael stands on a rise at the edge of the settlement, and its tower is visible from the road. The church has medieval origins and has been altered over the centuries, so that its Gothic core is joined with later changes to the interior and the exterior, which is typical of village churches in the Gorenjska region. Michael is a traditional patron of mountain and border places, and many churches in the Alps are dedicated to him.

The building is modest in scale but has a quiet dignity. Its walls are plain white with stone details, and its steep roof and slim tower fit well into the landscape of meadows and farmsteads. Inside, a Gothic-style tabernacle and other furnishings recall the long history of worship here, and the atmosphere is peaceful and simple. The church is open at set times or by arrangement, as is common in small parishes, and visitors should be prepared to find it closed outside services.

The cemetery next to the church is, for many visitors, the main reason to stop. Dovje is closely associated with Jakob Aljaž, the priest who served as parish priest here and who, in 1895, bought the summit of Triglav for a symbolic sum and built a small metal tower on top, now a national symbol known as the Aljaž Tower. He is buried at Dovje, and his grave draws many walkers and climbers. The cemetery also holds the graves of other local people, including mountaineers and sportspeople from the valley, which gives the place a special significance in Slovene alpine history.

Dovje is a good example of a traditional alpine village, with terraced fields, hayracks and farmhouses that have characteristic arched doorways, and it is easy to combine a visit with a walk in the surroundings. The Historic Blacksmith Site recalls the craft traditions of the valley, and the Monument near the main road marks local history. Mojstrana, a short distance away, has the Slovenian Alpine Museum and is the gateway to the Vrata and Kot valleys. The view of the Julian Alps from the church terrace is excellent in clear weather, and early morning offers the best light.
