Cemetery near St. Michael's Church

Dovje is a village in the upper Sava valley in the northwest of Slovenia, at the foot of the Julian Alps and a few minutes from Mojstrana, and it has a special place in the story of Slovenian mountaineering. The church of St. Michael stands on a small rise at the edge of the village, and the cemetery around it is sometimes called the mountaineers' cemetery, because so many people connected with the high mountains are buried here. Behind the church the great northern wall of Triglav and the crags of the Julian Alps rise into the sky, and few cemeteries anywhere have such a backdrop.

The best known grave is that of Jakob Aljaž, the parish priest of Dovje who loved the mountains and did more than almost anyone to make Triglav a national symbol. Aljaž bought the summit of Triglav for a few coins and built the small metal tower that bears his name, a landmark that stands there to this day and is part of the ritual of climbing the mountain. He also composed songs, among them the well-known Triglav song, and he helped to build mountain paths and huts. He lies in the churchyard where he served. Many others buried here died in the mountains. Other graves belong to climbers and mountain guides who lost their lives on nearby peaks, and memorials in the churchyard and along the valley recall them. Simple stones and plaques, some with carved ice axes and mountain motifs, record the names and the dates.

The church itself is medieval in origin, altered over the centuries, and its setting gives it a quiet, rural charm. It is a place of worship and a memorial site, so visitors should behave as they would in any cemetery: walk quietly, do not step on graves and avoid photographing mourners. Opening hours for the interior are limited, but the grounds are accessible.

The cemetery is easy to reach, and it fits into a day exploring the Upper Sava valley. Nearby you can see the Historic Blacksmith Site, a reminder of the area's iron-working tradition, the Monument near the main road, and examples of Historic Alpine architecture such as farmhouses with semi-circular doors, Terraced fields and the like. The Slovenian Alpine Museum in Mojstrana is a good companion visit, with exhibits on climbing history. Public transport connects Dovje with Kranjska Gora and the railway line.

It suits climbers, walkers, history lovers and anyone interested in the human side of the mountains. Allow half an hour. Easily reached from the road, St. Michael’s Church and its cemetery sit below the Triglav Mountains, which watch over the graves. This is the Upper Sava Valley at its most reflective.
