Pleterje Monastery

Pleterje Monastery, nestled in the tranquil countryside southwest of Kostanjevica na Krki, is one of Slovenia’s most remarkable spiritual and historical sites. Founded in 1407 by the Counts of Celje, this Carthusian monastery is renowned for its strict monastic tradition, serene setting, and centuries-old Gothic architecture. The monks who reside here maintain a vow of silence, creating an atmosphere of peace and contemplation that permeates the grounds.

While the monastery complex itself is largely closed to the public, visitors are welcome to explore the striking Holy Trinity Church—the only accessible part of the monastery. This Gothic gem features a rib-vaulted ceiling, a medieval rood screen, and a beautiful fresco of Mary and the Trinity. During services, you may hear the hauntingly beautiful chants of the monks, offering a rare glimpse into their contemplative way of life.

The monastery’s history is rich and eventful, having survived Turkish invasions, the upheaval of the Protestant Reformation, and the abolition of the Carthusian order in 1784. It was revived in 1899 by French monks, who rebuilt the complex according to traditional plans.
