Cvelbar Oak

Kostanjevica na Krki is a tiny town on an island in the Krka river in Lower Carniola, and the lowland around it is one of the best places in Slovenia to see old oak woods. The oak that dominates here is the pedunculate oak, called lužnjak in Slovene, a species that thrives on damp, heavy soil, grows to a great size and can live for many centuries. The Cvelbar Oak is a venerable specimen of that tree, a single great oak that locals value for its age and size and that stands as one of the natural monuments of the area. Standing under it, you can sense why oaks have had such a hold on the human imagination: the thick, furrowed trunk, the heavy lower limbs reaching far out, and the wide crown that casts deep shade.

Pedunculate oaks have a long and slow life. In youth they grow quickly, but they take a century or more to reach real size, and the oldest individuals may be several hundred years old. Over that time, they host an enormous community of life: hundreds of species of insects, many kinds of birds, bats that roost in hollows, fungi on the bark and roots, and lichens and mosses on the trunk. Dead and decaying wood on an old oak is especially valuable, which is why the best old trees are often left alone. The acorns once fed pigs let loose in the woods, and oak timber built houses, bridges and ships, so the tree was part of the local economy as well as the landscape.

The oak lies in the countryside near Kostanjevica, reached by gentle walking paths across meadows and past traditional farmsteads, and it can be combined with a walk in the Krakovo Forest, a large lowland oak forest that is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Slovenia. There are no facilities or admission fees, and the tree is best visited in daylight. Treat it with care: do not carve, climb or damage it, and avoid compacting the soil around its roots by walking too close to the trunk. The oak fits into a day in Kostanjevica na Krki. The Božidar Jakac Art Museum and its sculpture park, the Cistercian monastery, the Cerkev Sv.
