Pleterje
Carthusian monastery and open-air museum in a green valley
Pleterje, located near the town of Šentjernej in the Dolenjska region, is a destination steeped in history, spirituality, and rural charm. The heart of Pleterje is the Pleterje Charterhouse, a Carthusian monastery founded in 1403 by Count Herman II of Celje. As the westernmost Carthusian monastery in Europe and the only active one in Slovenia, Pleterje has played a significant role in the region’s religious and cultural history for over six centuries. The Carthusian order is known for its strict rules of silence, solitude, and contemplation, and the monks of Pleterje continue this tradition to this day.
The monastery complex is set within high stone walls, surrounded by lush vineyards, orchards, and the rolling hills of the Gorjanci mountains. While the inner cloister and monastic quarters are not open to the public, visitors can admire the Gothic church, which features beautiful stained glass and a peaceful atmosphere. The adjacent open-air museum provides a fascinating glimpse into traditional rural life in Dolenjska, with a collection of historic farm buildings, tools, and household items relocated from across the region. Guided tours of the museum offer insights into local customs, crafts, and agricultural practices.
One of Pleterje’s most famous products is its pear brandy (hruškovo žganje), distilled by the monks using centuries-old methods and pears grown in the monastery’s orchards. The brandy, along with honey, herbal liqueurs, and other monastic products, can be purchased at the monastery shop. The surrounding vineyards produce excellent Cviček and other regional wines, and local farms offer tastings of homemade cheese, bread, and cured meats.
Pleterje is also a place of pilgrimage and spiritual reflection. The monastery hosts occasional concerts, religious events, and cultural programs, especially during major feast days. The peaceful valley and nearby forests are ideal for walking, cycling, and birdwatching, with trails leading to scenic viewpoints and neighboring villages. The area’s natural beauty is particularly striking in spring and autumn, when wildflowers bloom and the vineyards turn golden.
Getting to Pleterje is straightforward by car, with well-marked roads from Novo Mesto, Kostanjevica na Krki, and Ljubljana. Ample parking is available near the monastery and museum. Public transport options include regional buses to Šentjernej, with local taxis or transfers to Pleterje. Accommodation ranges from guesthouses and farm stays to small hotels in the surrounding countryside.
The best time to visit Pleterje is from May to October, when the weather is mild and the valley is lush and green. Spring and early summer bring blooming orchards and wildflowers, while autumn is marked by grape and pear harvests and colorful foliage. Regardless of the season, Pleterje’s blend of spiritual heritage, rural tradition, and natural beauty ensures a memorable and restorative experience for every visitor.
