Bled Castle stands on a steep cliff roughly a hundred metres above the southern shore of Lake Bled, and it is the best vantage point over the lake, the island with its pilgrimage church and the line of the Julian Alps beyond. The castle is among the oldest in Slovenia: in the year 1004 the German king Henry II granted the Bled estate to the bishops of Brixen, and the first fortifications date from that period. The bishops kept the lordship for centuries, and the castle, rebuilt and extended in Gothic, Renaissance and later styles, remained in the possession of the Brixen church until the early nineteenth century.

The layout is typical of a medieval hill castle. A lower courtyard and an upper courtyard are linked by stairs, and the walls and towers follow the edge of the rock. The upper level holds a chapel decorated with painted decoration, a small museum that tells the story of the castle and the lake, and a terrace with sweeping views. In the lower courtyard visitors can see a working printing press, where Gutenberg-style printing is demonstrated, a wine cellar and displays of the castle's history. Inside the grounds there are a restaurant, a cafe and a bee house, and some of these are open only seasonally.

A walk around the walls is the main pleasure. From different points the lake appears in changing light, and in clear weather the Karavanke and Julian Alps frame the scene. The climb up from the lake takes some effort, either by a steep footpath from the town or by road, so comfortable shoes are useful. The castle is busiest in the middle of the day in summer, and early morning or late afternoon visits bring softer light and fewer crowds.

The rest of Bled offers many ways to extend the visit. The Lake Loop Walk circles the water in about two hours at a leisurely pace, and the nearby viewpoints of Ojstrica, Mala and Velika Osojnica and Straža give higher perspectives. Swimming Spots line the shore in summer, and Fijaker Rides in horse-drawn carriages are a traditional way to see the lake. Visitors interested in history will enjoy the castle most if they combine it with a stroll in the old parts of the town below.
