Mežica

Mežica lies in the Mežica Valley in the Koroška region of northern Slovenia, a short distance from the Austrian border and close to Ravne na Koroškem and Slovenj Gradec. The valley is narrow and wooded, with steep slopes that open onto high pastures below Mount Peca, which rises to more than 2,000 metres on the border with Austria. For centuries the area’s identity was shaped by one thing: lead and zinc ore. Mining began in the seventeenth century and, with industrial scale from the nineteenth century, it lasted until the 1990s. That long history shaped the town’s architecture, its culture and its traditions.

The mine is now the town’s principal attraction. Podzemlje Pece (Peca Underground) opens a small part of the vast network of galleries to visitors, who explore on foot, by bike or even by kayak. Guided tours go deep beneath Mount Peca and explain how miners worked, how ore was transported and what the underground geology looks like. The Black Hole Trail offers a mountain biking route through dimly lit tunnels, and kayaking tours glide through flooded passages, an unusual experience that keeps the story of mining alive in a new form. Above ground, Mežica is surrounded by forests, alpine meadows and scenic valleys. Well-marked trails lead to panoramic viewpoints, traditional farmsteads and the valleys of Topla, Koprivna and Bistra, each with its own character. Local food is hearty and straightforward. Inns serve Carinthian dishes such as soups, buckwheat and cheese specialities, smoked meats and homemade pastries, and some menus draw on what miners traditionally ate.

Getting to Mežica is straightforward by car, with good road connections from Slovenj Gradec, Ravne na Koroškem and Austria. Public transport is available, though a car or bicycle is recommended for exploring the surrounding valleys. The town is compact and easy to navigate on foot, with parking and visitor information near the main sites.

The best time to visit is June to September, when the weather is warm and suits outdoor activities, underground tours and valley walks. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures, blooming landscapes and fewer crowds, while winter suits snow sports and a peaceful alpine atmosphere.

With its mix of mining history, underground adventure and alpine beauty, Mežica is a rewarding stop in northern Slovenia, and it is the kind of place where a single day can include a mine, a mountain meadow and a hearty Carinthian lunch.

Few places in Slovenia’s north let you combine so many different things in one valley: a working-class mining story, a cool underground world, alpine pastures and the border mountains of Peca, all within a short drive of each other.
