Raduha

Raduha rises above the upper Savinja Valley in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, and it is one of the most accessible and rewarding peaks in the range. At 2,062 metres it is not among the highest, but its broad, flat summit and steep northern face give it a distinct profile. Its history is linked to pastoral tradition, since shepherds and farmers have used the mountain’s meadows to graze cattle and sheep for centuries. The relatively gentle slopes and flat top make it a popular choice for hikers of all abilities, while the cliffs and forests provide habitat for diverse plants and animals.

The main attraction is the Snow Cave (Snežna jama na Raduhi), at an elevation of around 1,500 metres. It is the highest tourist cave in Slovenia and one of the highest in Europe. Guided tours lead visitors into its chambers, where they can see ice formations, stalactites and underground halls. The cave stays cold all year, which makes it a refreshing escape in summer and an atmospheric place in other seasons. Bring warm clothing and sturdy shoes, as the floor can be wet and slippery. Tours run in the warmer months and usually start from the mountain hut nearby.

Hiking is the most popular activity, with several marked trails to the summit from different directions. The ascent from Planina Loka and the Koča na Loki Mountain Hut is one of the most scenic, passing through alpine meadows, forests and rocky ground. From the top, the view takes in the Savinja Alps, the Logar Valley and the distant Julian Alps. Mountain biking is also popular, with signposted routes through the foothills that join the wider trail network.

The area around Raduha is rich in natural and cultural sights. The Logar Valley Landscape Park, a short drive away, is known for its beauty, waterfalls and traditional farmsteads. The village of Luče is a gateway to the mountain, with accommodation, local food and guided tours, and Hiša Raduha, in the village, is a place where cooking and hospitality come together. Solčava, farther up the valley, is known for its mountain farms and the Panoramic Road. In winter the region offers snowshoeing, ski touring and winter hiking.

Getting to Raduha is straightforward by car, with access roads from Luče and Solčava. Parking is available at major trailheads and mountain huts. Public transport is limited, so a car or bicycle is recommended. Huts such as Koča na Loki provide refreshments, meals and overnight stays for those who want to stay longer.

The best time to visit is June to September, when the weather is warm and the trails are clear of snow. Spring and autumn offer quieter trails, wildflowers and colourful foliage, while summer is the season for hiking, caving and mountain biking. The Snow Cave is open for guided tours during the warmer months, but the mountain is beautiful year-round.

For most visitors the ascent is a full day. Start early, allow roughly three to four hours up from Planina Loka depending on fitness, and carry a rain jacket, since weather can change quickly on the high ground. The top is wide and open, with grass and rock, and on a clear day it gives a sense of space unusual in the Alps. Combined with a visit to the Snow Cave and a meal at a hut or in Luče, it makes a satisfying day in the mountains.
