Završnica Valley Hiking Trails

The Završnica Valley is a long, forested valley that runs into the Karavanke above Žirovnica, in Upper Carniola, and it offers some of the most varied walking in the area, from easy riverside strolls to long climbs to the high ridge. At its mouth lies a small reservoir, created in the early twentieth century to serve a hydroelectric power station, which gives the valley a quiet lake at its entrance, and from there the valley leads steadily upwards between steep wooded slopes. The path along the valley floor is gentle and shady, and it is popular with families and with cyclists on summer weekends.

The walking splits into several levels of effort. A gentle route follows the stream upward through forest, past meadows and small waterfalls, and leads toward the Hut at the Source of Završnica, a peaceful spot in an open clearing where walkers can rest. More energetic walkers continue to the Valvasorjev dom, a well-loved mountain hut at the head of the valley, reached by a path of an hour or so from the lower valley. The hut is known for its welcoming atmosphere, simple home cooking and views, and it is the usual starting point for climbs to the high ridge of the Karavanke and the summit of Stol, the highest peak in the range at 2,236 metres, with the Prešeren Lodge at Stol offering a high base for overnight stays.

History is another strand. High on the slopes above the valley lies the hilltop site of Ajdna, where archaeologists have found the remains of a fortified settlement from Late Antiquity, with house foundations and an early Christian church, and there are paths up to it from the valley. The village of Žirovnica has other cultural landmarks, including the birth house of the poet France Prešeren at Vrba and the apiary of the beekeeping pioneer Anton Janša at Breznica, and the Moste memorial recalls wartime events in the area. A walk in the valley can therefore be combined with a look at the poet's house or the beehives.

Autumn is a favourite season, when the beech woods turn gold and the weather is often stable, and spring brings flowers and fresh streams. Summer can be hot on the open ridges, while in winter snow closes the higher paths, and walkers need to check conditions. Good footwear, water and a rain layer are sensible at any time of year, and the weather in the mountains can change quickly.

The trails suit walkers of all levels, families, photographers and those who want a quiet day in the mountains within easy reach of Ljubljana and Bled.
