Anton Janša’s Apiary (Breznica)

Anton Janša’s Apiary in Breznica, Žirovnica, is a unique destination for anyone interested in Slovenia’s rich beekeeping tradition and rural heritage. This historical site honors Anton Janša (1734–1773), a pioneer of modern beekeeping and the first official teacher of apiculture in the Habsburg Monarchy. Janša’s legacy is celebrated globally—his birthday, May 20, is now recognized as World Bee Day.

The apiary, originally established by Janša’s father in 1734, has been carefully reconstructed and restored, most recently in 2017, to preserve its authentic character. Visitors can view traditional Carniolan beehives, each adorned with hand-painted front panels that reflect local folklore and Slovenian artistic traditions. These painted panels are a distinctive feature of Slovenian beekeeping and offer insight into the region’s cultural history.

Although Janša’s original birth house no longer stands, the apiary remains a monument of local importance and a symbol of Slovenia’s enduring relationship with bees and nature. The site is open year-round, 24 hours a day, making it easily accessible for a brief visit—most guests spend less than an hour exploring the grounds and learning about Janša’s contributions to beekeeping.
