Ajdna Archaeological Site

The Ajdna Archaeological Site in Žirovnica is a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and hikers alike, perched at 1,064 meters beneath Mt. Stol in the Karawanks mountain range. Discovered in the 1970s, Ajdna reveals the remnants of a late Antiquity settlement, dating back approximately 1,400 years to the turbulent period following the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Archaeological research has uncovered the foundations of 25 ancient houses, an early Christian temple, and a burial site with graves containing pottery, weapons, and jewelry—artifacts that now reside in the museum in Kranj.

Ajdna’s strategic clifftop location provided natural defenses and sweeping views over the Upper Sava Valley, making it a refuge for locals during times of unrest and migration. The preserved religious structure and the visible layout of the ancient village offer a tangible link to the past, allowing visitors to imagine the daily lives and challenges of its former inhabitants.
