Ajdna Archaeological Site

The Ajdna Archaeological Site is a fortified hilltop settlement from Late Antiquity, set on a steep rocky spur above the Upper Sava Valley near Žirovnica, on the southern slopes of the Karavanke below Stol. It lies at an altitude of roughly a thousand metres, high above the village of Potoki, and the climb to it is part of the visit. The site is protected as a cultural monument of national importance, and it is one of the most evocative archaeological places in northwestern Slovenia, since it shows how people lived in the troubled centuries after the Western Roman Empire lost control of the Alpine region.

The settlement dates from the fifth and sixth centuries, when communities in the Alps moved from the valleys to defensible heights during a period of migrations and instability. The plateau of Ajdna, with cliffs on several sides, offered natural protection, and the inhabitants strengthened it with walls. Archaeologists have uncovered the foundations of dwellings arranged along the plateau, the remains of an early Christian church with its apse, and a cemetery with graves that held pottery, tools and personal objects. Finds from the site are kept in regional museums. The name is thought to come from the local folk word ajd, which was used for pagans and giants, a reflection of how local people interpreted the ancient ruins.

The ruins are modest in height, mostly low walls and foundations, but the layout is easy to read, and information boards explain what each part was. The church foundations are the most striking element, a reminder of the spread of Christianity in the Alps. From the edge of the plateau the view opens over the Sava valley, the Julian Alps and the Karavanke, and it is easy to see why the site was chosen as a refuge. The area feels remote, with forest all around and the sound of wind in the trees.

Several marked routes climb to the site, starting from villages in the valley, and they vary from moderate walks to steeper climbs. The paths can be rocky and slippery after rain, so sturdy shoes are advisable, and the ascent takes a couple of hours return from the valley depending on the route. There are no facilities at the site, so bring water.

Ajdna suits walkers with an interest in history and archaeology and those looking for an unusual destination in the Karavanke. It combines well with a visit to Prešeren's Birth House at Vrba, Anton Janša's apiary at Breznica and the walks of the Završnica Valley. Check local trail information before setting out.
