Prešeren Lodge at Stol (2174 m)

Prešeren Lodge at Stol, Prešernova koča na Stolu, is a mountain hut at an altitude of about 2,174 metres in the Karavanke, the long range that forms the border between Slovenia and Austria. It stands on the southern side of Stol, the highest peak of the Karavanke at 2,236 metres, above the valley of Žirovnica and the Završnica, and it is named after France Prešeren, the national poet of the Slovenes, who was born in the village of Vrba below. The hut is one of the best-known high-mountain refuges in the range, and it makes a natural base for the ascent of Stol.

The view from the hut is a good reward for the climb. On clear days the whole sweep of the Julian Alps is spread out to the south, with Triglav and the Martuljek group among the peaks, while to the north the ridge falls away toward Carinthia and the plain around Klagenfurt in Austria. Below, the Sava valley and the Gorenjska plain stretch toward Ljubljana. Sunrise and sunset from here are popular with climbers who stay the night, and the cool, clear air at this height makes the stars unusually bright.

The routes to the hut are marked and well used. A common approach starts in the Završnica valley, where the Valvasor Lodge, Valvasorjev dom, lies at the foot of the mountain, and climbs steadily through forest and then open mountain pasture to the ridge. The ascent takes some hours and is steep in places, but it is a walking route, not a climbing route, and suits fit walkers with proper footwear. Other paths approach from different sides of the range, and several huts are strung along the main ridge trail, so the hut can be part of a multi-day traverse of the Karavanke. As always in the mountains, the weather should be checked in advance, and thunderstorms in summer afternoons are a real hazard on the exposed ridge.

The hut offers simple mountain food, with hot dishes and soups, tea and local specialities, and it has dormitory beds for overnight guests. Because it is a high hut, services are basic, water may be limited and reservations are advisable at weekends and in high season. The opening period follows the hiking season, and it is normally closed in winter, so check with the Alpine Association or the hut itself before setting out.

The hut suits experienced hill walkers, families with older children who are used to long days, and anyone who wants to combine a classic Karavanke ascent with an overnight stay in the mountains. It is easy to pair with a visit to Prešeren's Birth House and the Završnica valley below, and the area also has the Ajdna archaeological site, the memorial at Moste and Anton Janša's apiary at Breznica.
