Prešeren’s Birth House

France Prešeren, born in 1800, is the greatest poet in the Slovene language, and his birth house in the village of Vrba, in the municipality of Žirovnica, is one of the most important literary shrines in the country. Prešeren wrote the poem Zdravljica, a toast to freedom and friendship among nations, whose seventh stanza is the national anthem of Slovenia, and the Sonnets of Unhappiness and The Baptism on the Savica, which shaped the language of Slovene literature. The anniversary of his death on 8 February is the national Culture Day, a public holiday, which shows how central he is to the country's identity.

The house stands in a quiet farming village at the foot of the Karavanke, with the peaks of the Stol range behind. It was the family farmstead where the future poet was born and spent his childhood, before he went to school in Ljubljana and then to study law in Vienna. The building has been altered over time and was rebuilt after a fire in the nineteenth century, but it keeps the form of a prosperous Upper Carniolan farmhouse, with a stone portal and a large kitchen and rooms around a central hall. It has been run as a museum for many decades and is one of the best-known house museums in Slovenia.

Inside, the exhibits tell the story of Prešeren's life and work. Displays of letters, books and portraits trace his path from the village to the city, his unhappy love for Julija Primic, his career as a lawyer in Kranj, where he spent his last years and is buried, and the reception of his poetry. Rooms are furnished to recall the way a farming family lived in the early nineteenth century. The house may be closed for renovation from time to time, so check before travelling, and visitors can still enjoy the setting and the village.

The area has other sights that pair well with the house. Nearby, the birth houses of Matija Čop, a scholar who was Prešeren's friend and adviser, and of the writer Fran Saleški Finžgar tell the story of other cultural figures, and a Path of Cultural Heritage connects them. Ajdna Archaeological Site, a late-antique settlement on a cliff, Anton Janša's Apiary in Breznica, the Moste Hostages Memorial and the Završnica Valley Hiking Trails provide further variety, while the Prešeren Lodge at Stol, at about 2,170 metres, is a destination for mountain walkers.
