World War II tunnels with rare cave formations

9.0/10
#1 of 2 in Kranj

The Underground Tunnels in Kranj are one of Slovenia’s most intriguing historical attractions, offering visitors a unique journey beneath the old town’s cobbled streets. Stretching for 1,300 meters, these man-made tunnels were constructed during World War II as air-raid shelters and have since become a fascinating window into the town’s past.

Guided tours are available on Tuesdays and Fridays at 5 PM, and weekends at 10 AM, while self-guided tours can be enjoyed daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. Tours last about an hour and take you through cool, cave-like corridors where the temperature remains a steady 10–12°C—so warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended. Along the way, you’ll discover natural dripstones, rare cave-dwelling species, and learn about the tunnels’ construction by builders Josip Slavec and Josip Dedek.

The tunnels also feature an engaging exhibition that details their wartime history and the broader context of Kranj’s development. A highlight of the tour is a simulation of an air raid, which brings the wartime atmosphere to life.

Admission is €7 for adults, €5 for children up to 16 and seniors over 65, and free for children under 3. Advance registration is required, with tickets available at Kranjska hiša. Recognized with the silver Sejalec award for innovation in tourism, the Underground Tunnels of Kranj offer a memorable blend of history, adventure, and underground discovery.
