Gothic Church of Saint Kancijan and Ossuary
Gothic church and ancient ossuary in Kranj
The Gothic Church of Saint Kancijan, also known as St. Cantius, stands as a striking landmark in the heart of Kranj, Slovenia. Built in the early 15th century, this church is celebrated as one of the country’s finest examples of Gothic architecture, with its soaring nave, pointed arches, and elegant bell tower that dominates the town’s skyline. The church’s design has influenced many later religious buildings in the region, and its bell tower offers panoramic views of the Slovenian Alps and the picturesque old town below.
Adjacent to the church is the Kranj Ossuary, a fascinating archaeological site that opened to the public in 1981. Excavations here have revealed a complex history dating back to the 7th century, including remnants of earlier church structures, a baptistery, and a cemetery chapel. The ossuary itself houses the remains from a large Old Slavic burial ground, as well as the 15th-century tomb of the Counts Eghk. Visitors can explore the underground area, where excavated materials are displayed chronologically, offering a unique glimpse into the spiritual and social life of Kranj’s past inhabitants.
The church and ossuary are open daily and admission is free, making them accessible highlights for anyone interested in history, architecture, or archaeology. Together, they provide a compelling window into Kranj’s layered heritage and the enduring significance of this sacred site.
