Khislstein Castle
Historic castle housing Gorenjska Museum and cultural events
Khislstein Castle, perched above the old town of Kranj, is a striking blend of history, culture, and contemporary life in the heart of Slovenia’s Gorenjska region. Named after the influential Khisl family, who acquired the estate in the late 16th century, the castle’s roots stretch back even further, with previous owners including the Ortenburgs, Counts of Cilli, Habsburgs, and Auerspergs. Over the centuries, Khislstein has evolved from a medieval stronghold to a Renaissance residence and now serves as a vibrant cultural hub.
Today, the castle houses the Gorenjska Museum, where visitors can explore engaging exhibitions on regional history, art, and ethnography. The museum’s displays bring to life the stories of Kranj and its surroundings, from prehistoric times through the modern era. The castle’s open-air stage is a popular venue for concerts, theater performances, and summer festivals, adding a lively atmosphere to the historic setting.
A highlight for many is the castle café, Khislstein 12.56, which offers a cozy spot to relax with a coffee or local treat while enjoying views of the castle courtyard and the town below. The castle is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM, with entrance fees available on request.
Whether you’re interested in history, culture, or simply soaking up the ambiance of a beautifully restored castle, Khislstein Castle is a must-visit destination in Kranj.
