Rock of Iglica

Bohinjska Bela is a small village on the road between Bled and Bohinj, in the Julian Alps, and above it rises the limestone rock known as Iglica, a name that means needle. The cliffs are one of the village's local landmarks and attract two kinds of visitors: climbers who come for the routes and walkers who come for the waterfall. It is a modest place compared with the big lakes nearby, but it is easy to reach, quiet and free of the crowds that gather at Bled and Bohinj in summer.

The waterfall is the main natural feature. Water from the hillside drops down the rock face of Iglica as a slender, white thread, spreading into a cool mist at the base after rain or snowmelt. In dry summers it can shrink to a trickle, so the best time to see it is spring and after rain. A short path leads from the village to the foot of the falls, where the sound of water echoing from the rock and the damp air under the trees make a refreshing stop on a hot day. Take care on wet rock and keep to the path, because limestone becomes slippery when wet.

The cliffs offer sport climbing, and the nearby Stara Bela climbing site and the cliffs of Galetovec belong to the same local climbing area, with routes of different lengths and grades. Climbers come in the warmer months, and watching them from below is a pleasant way to pass time. If you want to climb, local guides and the climbing community can advise on routes and safety, and the usual precautions for helmets, ropes and weather apply.

Around the rock there is more to see. The village has the Babji Zob (Hag's Tooth) rock formation with a small cave beneath it, described under Caverns & Caves, and Cycling trails lead through the valley and onwards to the lakes. The road and the railway connect Bohinjska Bela with the larger centres, so you can arrive without a car.

The Rock of Iglica suits families, walkers and climbers who want a short outing with a bit of scenery. Allow an hour for the walk and the waterfall, and longer if you plan to climb or explore the neighbouring trails. Wear sturdy shoes and pack a layer for the shade. For a short, easy outing, the Rock of Iglica rewards you with a taste of Slovenia’s alpine side. The Iglica Waterfall is the highlight, but the cliffs are worth a look too.
