Cycling trails

Bohinjska Bela is a small village on the road between Lake Bled and the Bohinj valley, in the part of the Julian Alps where the Sava Bohinjka river flows toward the Sava plain. The village lies in a broad, open stretch of valley with meadows on both sides, and it is a convenient base for cycling because the main routes of the area meet here. The landscape is gentle, with hayracks standing in the fields, small villages with church spires and mountains forming a ridge along the horizon, and the quiet roads make for relaxed riding.

The best known route is the Bohinj Cycle Trail, which follows the valley between Bohinjska Bistrica and the villages around Lake Bohinj, using a mix of quiet lanes and dedicated paths. The terrain is mostly flat, and the surface is largely paved, which makes it suitable for families with children and for beginners. Along the way you ride past meadows, farmsteads and the river, with views of the peaks, and there are places for picnics and swimming in the Sava Bohinjka in summer. From the lake, the route continues to Stara Fužina and the entrance to the Mostnica Gorge, and visitors can leave their bikes and walk.

For stronger riders there are climbs on forest roads and mountain tracks that connect Bohinjska Bela with neighbouring villages and the plateau of Pokljuka, giving rewarding descents and fine views. Mountain-bike routes are signposted, and many paths cross hiking trails, so it is easy to combine cycling with short walks. In spring and autumn the roads are quiet, and in summer it is best to ride early in the day, before the heat and traffic build up. Helmets and a rain jacket are advisable, since mountain weather can change quickly.

The area also has natural features that reward a stop. Babji Zob, or Hag's Tooth, is a rock tower popular with climbers, and the Rock of Iglica, the Galetovec area and the Stara Bela climbing site attract those who like vertical routes, while Caverns and Caves in the surrounding hills offer an underground diversion. Bike rental and repair services are available in Bled and Bohinj, and many guesthouses can store bicycles. Electric bikes make the climbs easier. The ride is also an easy way to link Bled and Bohinj by pedal, giving a day trip of varied scenery.
