Babji Zob (Hag's Tooth)

Babji Zob, or Hag’s Tooth, is a striking natural landmark near Bohinjska Bela, Slovenia, renowned for its dramatic 300-meter cliff that rises from the Jelovica plateau. The name “Hag’s Tooth” comes from the cliff’s jagged profile, which is said to resemble a witch’s tooth and has inspired local legends for generations. This imposing rock formation is a favorite destination for hikers and nature lovers, offering panoramic views over the Sava Bohinjka valley and the surrounding alpine landscape.

Beneath the cliff lies the Cave under Babji Zob, one of Slovenia’s oldest caves, formed during the ice age by glacial waters. The cave stretches for about 300 meters and is celebrated for its unique dripstone formations, including rare helectites and sparkling calcite crystals. Discovered by a local villager around 200 years ago, the cave has attracted visitors since the 19th century and was further developed for tourism after 1970, with the addition of staircases, fences, and lighting.

Guided tours, organized by the cave explorers’ club Bled, take visitors through the accessible sections of the cave, revealing its geological wonders and sharing stories of its discovery and exploration. While some areas remain off-limits, the tour offers a fascinating glimpse into Slovenia’s underground world.
