Babji Zob (Hag's Tooth)

Babji Zob, the Hag's Tooth, is a jagged crag of limestone that rises above the village of Bohinjska Bela, on the road between Bled and Bohinj in the Julian Alps. The rock forms part of the steep edge of the high plateau above the valley, and its name comes from its outline. Seen from below, the summit looks like a single broken tooth sticking up from a ragged jaw, and that was enough to inspire the name and a set of local stories about old women, witches and the like. In Slovene folklore, the word babja, from baba, an old woman, often appears in place names that refer to odd rock formations, so the Hag's Tooth is part of a wider pattern of mountain legends.

The tooth is a landmark that you notice quickly as you approach the village, and it dominates the view from the road. The cliffs below it are steep and impressive, and in places they provide routes for climbers, which links Babji Zob to the other crags of the area, including the Stara Bela climbing site and Galetovec. Walkers can approach the foot of the cliffs on paths from the village, enjoying views over the Sava Bohinjka valley and the wooded slopes opposite, and the surrounding countryside offers a range of trails of different lengths. The Cycling trails of the valley also pass close by, which makes Babji Zob a good objective for a ride.

Beneath the rock there is a cave, a small show cave known for its delicate dripstone and the rare, twisting formations called helictites, which is described in more detail under Caverns and Caves. The cave tours are organised by a local caving club, and visits need to be arranged in advance. The cave and the cliff together make a varied half-day outing, with the rock above and the underground world below.

Practical points are simple. Wear good shoes, take water and a layer, and check the weather before heading up. The paths are not difficult but can be steep or slippery in places, and rockfall is possible below any limestone cliff, so do not linger under the face. Climbers should use proper equipment and local guidance.

Bohinjska Bela is a quiet village that gets fewer visitors than Bled or Bohinj, and that is its appeal. The Rock of Iglica, with its waterfall, is a short distance away, and the lakes can be reached in a few minutes by car or train. Babji Zob suits hikers, climbers and families who like a short outing with a story attached. The Cave under Babji Zob and Hag’s Tooth together make one of Slovenia’s more intriguing short outings. Guided visits to the cave show another side of Slovenia, and the cliff itself is free to admire.
