Galetovec

Galetovec is a hill on the edge of the Pokljuka plateau, rising above the Sava Bohinjka valley near Bohinjska Bela, and it is known for a high cliff on its southern side that gives one of the best views in the area. The summit is not high by Alpine standards, at roughly 1,265 metres, and it can be reached without any climbing skill, which makes it a favourite for walkers who want a big view for moderate effort. From the top, the ground falls away steeply to the valley, and the view takes in the villages of the Bled and Bohinj basins, the wall of the Bohinj mountains on the far side, and, on a clear day, the plains toward Jesenice and Kranj.

There are several ways up, with different lengths and levels of difficulty. The longest and most strenuous route starts in the valley by the Sava Bohinjka and climbs steadily through forest, gaining a lot of height and taking several hours, so it suits fit walkers with a taste for a full day out. Easier routes begin higher on the plateau, near the villages of Gorjuše or at Belska Planina, and reach the summit in a couple of hours at a relaxed pace, and some of the approach is possible by car on forest roads. The paths are marked and well used, passing through spruce and beech forest and across alpine meadows that are full of flowers in early summer.

On the way, walkers might see chamois, roe deer and a range of birds, and the plateau's open pastures are used for summer grazing, which means cattle are common. There are no facilities at the summit, so food and water must be carried, and the cliff edge is unprotected, so children and dogs need to be kept under close control. The weather is changeable, and afternoon clouds and storms can build up quickly in summer, so it is wise to start early and to check the forecast. In winter, the paths may be icy or snow-covered, and the plateau is a place for ski touring and snowshoeing for those with experience.

Galetovec fits into a day in the Bohinjska Bela area, which is also a centre for climbing and cycling. Babji Zob (Hag's Tooth), the Rock of Iglica and the Stara Bela climbing site attract climbers, Caverns & Caves lie in the surrounding hills, and the Cycling trails of the valley offer easy riding. Combine the walk with a picnic on the summit and a rest in the valley afterwards, and consider the late afternoon for the best light across the valley.
