Outdoor adventures in Zgornji Brnik

Zgornji Brnik is a village on the Gorenjska plain, north of Ljubljana, close to the airport that serves the capital and a short distance from the town of Kranj. The plain here is broad and open, a patchwork of fields, small woods and farms, and the mountains rise to the north and east like a wall: the Kamnik-Savinja Alps with the ski area of Krvavec to the east, and the Julian Alps and Karavanke on the northern horizon. The terrain is gentle, which makes cycling and walking easy. Lanes and farm tracks link the villages of the plain, with views toward the mountains, and routes run through patches of woodland and along small streams. Cyclists can ride toward Kranj or Kamnik, or follow the Sava, whose valley offers a flat and scenic route, and longer excursions lead to Cerklje na Gorenjskem and the foothills below Krvavec. The best time for these activities is from spring to early autumn, when the weather is mild and the countryside green, though the plain can be hot in midsummer, so it is wise to ride early. In winter, snow often lies in the fields, and the nearby hills offer cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions allow.

Visitors who want a more active day can reach the high ground quickly. Krvavec, a mountain with chairlifts and ski slopes, lies above Cerklje, and in summer it is a starting point for hikes along the ridge and views over the whole of Upper Carniola, while the Kamnik-Savinja Alps offer more demanding walks. Paragliders often fly from the slopes, and the broad meadows below are used for sport and recreation. The area is also popular with cyclists who enjoy training on quiet roads.

The village itself is small and quiet, with a few guesthouses and local eateries serving traditional Slovenian food, so most visitors dine in Kranj or Cerklje, which have more choice. Kranj has an old town built on a terrace above the Sava and Kokra rivers, a Prešeren house and an underground tunnel network. Sightseeing tours in Zgornji Brnik and the surroundings can be arranged locally. The village is easy to reach by car or taxi from the airport and from Ljubljana, and it suits travellers who arrive late or leave early. Because information is limited, it is wise to plan routes and book accommodation ahead.
