7.3/10
Piran & Istrian Coast Region

Strunjan, nestled on Slovenia’s Adriatic coast between Piran and Izola, is a destination that captivates visitors with its harmonious blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and serene seaside atmosphere. The settlement is part of the Municipality of Piran and is renowned for its protected landscapes, making it a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a quieter alternative to the busier coastal towns nearby.

The history of Strunjan is closely tied to its salt-making tradition, which dates back to at least the Middle Ages. The Strunjan Salt Pans, still operational today, are among the oldest in the Adriatic and represent a living testament to the region’s economic and cultural past. Salt production shaped the local community, influencing settlement patterns, architecture, and even the local cuisine. The area’s strategic coastal position also made it a point of interest for various empires and states over the centuries, including the Venetian Republic and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, each leaving subtle marks on the landscape and culture.

The centerpiece of Strunjan is the Strunjan Nature Park, a protected area covering over 400 hectares. The park is famous for its dramatic cliffs, the highest on the Adriatic coast, which rise up to 80 meters above the sea and offer breathtaking panoramic views. Walking trails wind along the cliff tops, providing opportunities to observe rare Mediterranean flora and fauna, as well as stunning vistas of the Gulf of Trieste and the picturesque towns of Piran and Izola. The park also encompasses the Strunjan Salt Pans, where visitors can learn about traditional salt harvesting methods and the ecological importance of the wetlands, which serve as a habitat for numerous bird species.

One of Strunjan’s most beloved attractions is Plaža mesečev zaliv, or Moon Bay Beach. Tucked beneath the cliffs, this secluded pebble beach is accessible via a scenic footpath and is prized for its crystal-clear waters and tranquil setting. The main Strunjan Beach, closer to the settlement, offers more facilities and is ideal for families and swimmers. Both beaches are known for their clean water and peaceful ambiance, making them perfect spots for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches and salt pans, Strunjan offers a variety of activities for visitors. The area is crisscrossed by well-marked hiking and cycling trails, including the popular Trail Above the Cliffs, which connects Strunjan with neighboring coastal towns and provides spectacular views at every turn. Tennis courts, mini golf, and other leisure facilities are available for those seeking more active pursuits. The settlement’s mild Mediterranean climate supports lush gardens and orchards, and local restaurants serve fresh seafood and regional specialties, often seasoned with the locally produced salt.

Cultural highlights include the Church of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage site perched above the cliffs, offering both spiritual significance and panoramic views. The annual Strunjan Salt Festival celebrates the area’s salt-making heritage with demonstrations, tastings, and cultural events, providing a lively glimpse into local traditions.

Getting to Strunjan is convenient by car, with well-maintained coastal roads connecting it to Piran (about 5 km away), Portorož, and Izola. Public buses run regularly between these towns and Strunjan, making it accessible for travelers without a car. The nearest major train station is in Koper, about 20 km away, from where buses or taxis can be used to reach Strunjan.
