Strunjan Cliff

Strunjan is a small stretch of coast between Piran and Izola, and its cliff is the most dramatic piece of shoreline on the Slovenian coast. Most of the coast here is low and gentle, with harbours and beaches, but at Strunjan the land ends in a steep, crumbling wall of flysch that rises directly from the sea and is generally described as the highest flysch cliff on the Adriatic. It reaches around eighty metres, and above it the land flattens out into a strip of fields, pine woods and Mediterranean scrub. The whole area is protected as the Strunjan Landscape Park.

Flysch is a layered rock, alternating bands of sandstone and softer marl, laid down on an ancient sea floor and later folded and raised. At Strunjan the layers are visible in the cliff face as stripes of grey and ochre, and the soft marl erodes quickly, which is why the face is steep, ragged and constantly shedding small slides. The beach below is stony and receives the material that falls from above, so the shore is a place to look but not to linger beneath the face. The danger of rockfall is real, and signs warn visitors to keep at a safe distance. A clean walk along the top of the cliff is far better, and the views are wide, taking in the Gulf of Trieste, the line of the Italian coast and, on very clear days, the distant Alps.

The park has well-marked educational trails that run along the clifftop and through woodland of Aleppo pine and cypress, with information boards explaining the geology, plants and history. Spring brings flowers and migrating birds, and sunset is a favourite time, when the light turns the cliff face golden. Take water and a hat in summer, as shade is patchy, and keep to the paths, especially near the edge.

The wider Strunjan area adds to the visit. The salt-making village shows how salt was produced here by hand, in the traditional way, and the Saltpan House presents the park's story. A Park of the Sea exhibition is one way to learn more. Mesečev Zaliv, Moon Bay, is a small cove nestled under the cliff on the Strunjan beaches, and Talaso Strunjan is a spa centre that uses seawater and sea products. A path along the coast links Strunjan to Piran, so the cliff can be a half-day walk.

The cliff suits walkers, photographers and anyone who enjoys coastal scenery. Guided tours can be arranged in advance through the park, and independent exploration is easy. While the cliff is the headline, the whole Strunjan Cliff area is a quiet corner of Slovenia’s coast. Within the park you can spend a full day.
